SA’s airfreight sustainability in the spotlight

There are many issues facing the South African aviation industry but most important on its agenda is the issue of sustainability.
This was the conclusion drawn by speakers at the monthly Transport Forum held in Woodmead, Johannesburg on Thursday.
According to Professor Jackie Walters, head of the Department of Transport and Supply Chain Management at the University of Johannesburg, it is crucial to protect the principle of competition as the aviation industry moves beyond just survival into an era of sustainability.
“It is disturbing to note that some 73% of all new start up airlines have folded in recent years in South Africa, and while that is not different from the international trend, it is important that as a country that we address the challenges the industry faces in an effort to ensure it becomes sustainable.”
Erik Venter, joint CEO of Comair, told delegates that it was important to also see the aviation industry in its totality and to address issues while working towards a big picture solution.
